Interconnected Smoke Alarms Brisbane: Upgrade Your Home Before 2027
From 1 January 2027, every owner-occupied home in Queensland must have photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms. Book your upgrade with a licensed electrician from Caboolture to Mt Gravatt.
- Every bedroom, hallway and level covered
- Hardwired and wireless options
- Your price before we start
What your home needs from 1 January 2027
Rentals and homes being sold have had to meet the new rules since 2022. On 1 January 2027, the final stage applies to everyone else, including owner-occupied houses, townhouses and units.
- Photoelectric alarms that meet AS 3786-2014. Older ionisation alarms don't qualify.
- Interconnected, so when one sounds, they all sound.
- In every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level.
- Replaced if they're over 10 years old or fail a test.
How your upgrade works
- Tell us about your home. Bedrooms, levels and whether your alarms are hardwired or battery (not sure is fine).
- Get your price. Same-day callback during business hours, with a clear price before any work starts.
- Installation and testing. A licensed electrician fits every required alarm, interconnects them and tests the system.
- Done. Your home meets the 2027 rules, and you can tick it off the list.
Hardwired or wireless?
This is the question we get most. The answer depends on what's in your ceiling now.
- You have 240V hardwired alarms: they must be replaced with 240V alarms, connected by a licensed electrician. You can't swap them for battery alarms.
- You only have battery alarms: you can use 10-year non-removable battery alarms that interconnect wirelessly.
- Not sure? Choose "not sure" when you enquire and your electrician will check.

Homeowner questions
How long does a smoke alarm upgrade take?
Most single-level homes are done in one visit. Your electrician will give you a time estimate when they call with your price.
Wireless or hardwired interconnected alarms: which do I need?
If your home already has 240V hardwired alarms, they must be replaced with 240V alarms. If your home only has battery alarms, 10-year non-removable battery alarms that interconnect wirelessly are allowed. Your electrician will confirm what suits your home.
Do I need alarms in every bedroom?
Yes. The rules require an alarm in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level, even levels without bedrooms.
What does interconnected mean?
Interconnected alarms are linked, by wiring or wirelessly, so when one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the home sounds.
Will there be mess?
Alarm upgrades are a clean job. Your electrician fits the new alarms, tests them and takes the old alarms away.
